Situated in Clatsop County in Oregon, USA, the city of Astoria is located at the mouth of the Columbia River. It covers an area of 27.5 sq km and is the oldest white settlement to the west of the Rocky Mountains.
The city has a maritime climate. The winters are mild and wet with an average temperature of 2°C. Summers are cool with occasional heat waves. The average temperature in summer is 20°C. It receives abundant rainfall and very little snow.
John Jacob Astor’s Pacific Fur Company established Fort Astoria in 1811. From a small settlement, Astoria grew into a bustling port after the arrival of immigrants from Finland, Scandinavia and China.
With a population of around 10,000, the people celebrate their Scandinavian heritage during the annual Scandinavian Midsummer Festival. Fishing, lumber and agriculture are the principle industries of this city.
