The Kingdom of England merged with the Kingdom of Scotland to form the Kingdom of Britain in 1707. Prior to this, England underwent the English Reformation whereby the Roman Catholic Church was abolished. Royal Supremacy replaced it and the Church of England was established outside the Roman Catholic Church. With the English Civil Wars, it was established constitutionally that the monarchs could not rule without the consent of the parliament.

Over the years, England’s culture has diffused with that of the UK. Whether it has been art, architecture, literature or science, England has played a significant part. The English culture came into its own with the English Renaissance, during which all aspects of culture flourished. Music has been a very important aspect of England’s culture. The recent past has seen some of the best rock bands of the century coming from England.

Bordered by Scotland in the north and Wales in the west, England comprises the central and southern two-thirds of the island of Great Britain. London is the largest city of England.
