Most of Siena’s original constructions are from brick. Most of the fortified medieval town still stands within the modern city. The Gothic-style church, Duomo, houses some of the best examples of Tuscan art in the form of frescoes, mosaic and sculptures.
Il Campo is considered to be the best piazza in Italy. It was constructed in the shape of a fan and a climb to the top gives a great view of the surrounding Gothic structures. The primary one amongst them is the Palazzo Pubblico, the town hall, which houses the Civic Museum. A beautiful medieval time chapel, Cappella della Piazza with a soaring brick tower, also stands here.
Siena’s Palio, a bareback horse race, is held in July and August is one of the best events in Italy. This daredevil event, which has its origins in the Middle Ages, sees week-long celebrations with parades and feasts apart from the actual race.
